Finished the New Road Trip Mix CD

Posted on: May 19, 2009

Perhaps I should call it a moving mix or a departure mix…

The tone of the current road trip mix CD is radically different from the tone of the last road trip mix CD. I think part of the reason is that the last road trip mix CD was mostly the road trip mix CD I’d been making in my head for years, but never actually created. On road trips in the past I’d get bored with the CDs I’d brought with me or there’d be nothing good on the radio and I’d dream of making the perfect road trip mix CD, the CD you would never get bored with no matter how many times you played it.

For the record I did not succeed in creating the perfect road trip mix CD, nor is this new road trip mix the pinnacle of perfection. It’s the little imperfections and idiosyncrasies specific to the moment when the mix was created that make mix CDs great anyway.

So this mix CD is much more mellow and contemplative than the last one. It still has its moment of amusing irony though. I like the part when Anastasia finishes singing about finding the loving family she can’t remember but is sure is out there waiting for her, and then Amanda Palmer from the Dresden Dolls retorts that nothing is crueler than children who come from good homes.

Here’s the song list:

1. St. Robinson In His Cadillac Dream by Counting Crows
2. On the Sunny Side of the Street by Billy Holiday
3. American Girl by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
4. Leaving by The Indigo Girls
5. The Old Apartment by Barenaked Ladies
6. Foreplay / Long Time by Boston
7. Journey To the Past from the Anastasia Soundtrack
8. Night Reconnaissance by The Dresden Dolls
9. House of Cards by Mary Chaplin Carpenter
10. We Gotta Get Out Of This Place covered by Blue Oyster Cult
11. Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey
12. Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl) by Looking Glass
13. Stop and Stare by OneRepublic
14. Beast of Burden by The Rolling Stones
15. Hey Jack Kerouac by 10,000 Maniacs
16. Running on Empty by Jackson Browne
17. Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What A Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
18. The World at Large by Modest Mouse

Hope my cat, Yoshimi likes the road trip mix CD. She’s never been on a long car ride before. This should be quite an adventure.
