Bay Area Literary Magazines & Presses

In my continued efforts to get the lay of the literary land as it were in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and the rest of the Bay Area I’ve decided to attempt to compile a list of Bay Area literary magazines and presses. I suspect this will get rather long. Here goes nothing:

Literary Magazines

  • Fourteen Hills – the international literary magazine published by San Francisco State University
  • Eleven Eleven – the journal of literature and art published by California College of the Arts
  • 580 Split – the literary magazine published by Mills College in Oakland
  • Switchback – University of San Francisco’s literary magazine
  • Mary Magazine – published by St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA
  • Reed Magazine – established in 1948 making it one of the oldest university lit mags on the west coast, published by San Jose State University
  • ZYZZYVA – a journal of west coast writers & artists, based in San Francisco since 1985
  • New American Writing – Poetry and cross-genre magazine based in Mill Valley and edited by Maxine Chernoff and Paul Hoover
  • Oyster Boy Review – Pacifica-based journal publishing poetry and fiction
  • Three Penny Review – Berkeley-based journal publishing poetry, fiction, and critical articles
  • Tripwire – a journal of poetics
  • McSweeney’s – Dave Eggers peerless fiction magazine
  • The Believer – Affiliated with McSweeney’s, publishes book reviews and poetry
  • Tea Party Magazine – progressive and multi-ethnic arts and culture publication based in Oakland
  • The Quarterly Conversation – opinionated, insightful reviews of recent works of literature and culturally relevant nonfiction
  • The Rumpus – focused on culture but not “People-Magazine culture
  • Paul Revere’s Horse – San Francisco literary journal
  • Narrative Magazine – Well-funded fiction magazine based in San Francisco

    Presses

  • Manic D. Press – publishes comix, poetry, and fiction by talented writers who may not be considered commercially viable
  • Krupskaya – poetry press that publishes three books every two years
  • Duration Press – Sausalito-based poetry press specializing in e-books
  • Watch Word Press – Berkeley-based indie press
  • UC Press – University of California’s press
  • City Lights Publishers – Publishing company affiliated with the famous North Beach bookstore
  • Kelsey Street Press – publishes books of experimental poetry and/or prose by women
  • Achiote Press – publishes the unrepresentable, transnational, migratory, and adaptive, form-wise they publish chapbooks and a seasonal journal

    Tattoo Highway is an online publication based in Oakland, about to publish its final issue, though, after ten years of two issues per year.
